Rhode Island Holiday Light Shows 2026: Free Christmas Lights Near Providence & Warwick

← Back to Blog

Every year, Rhode Island families load up the car and go searching for the best holiday light shows in RI. And every year, the same question comes up: where are the best Christmas lights in Rhode Island this season? As hosts of one of RI's longest-running free light shows, we put together this guide to help you plan your holiday lights tour in 2026.

Rhode Island is a small state with a big holiday spirit. From synchronized computer-controlled displays in Warwick to neighborhood classics in Cranston and Coventry, there's no shortage of Christmas light shows in RI worth visiting. Best of all, most of them are completely free.

🎄 1. Lewis Family Christmas Light Show — Warwick, RI

What makes the Lewis show stand out among Rhode Island holiday light shows is the synchronization. Every light in the display is timed precisely to each beat of the music. There's no walking required — you stay in your warm car with the heat on and the radio tuned to 106.9 FM. It's a uniquely Rhode Island experience that brings the whole family together without spending a dime.

The Shenandoah Road neighborhood in Warwick is also worth touring even after the show ends — several nearby streets have their own impressive Christmas light displays, making it easy to extend your holiday lights outing into a full neighborhood tour. See the full list of nearby Warwick displays on the homepage.

🎈 2. Other Free Christmas Light Displays in Rhode Island

Beyond the Lewis show, Rhode Island has a number of community and family Christmas light displays worth seeking out each season. While we can't verify hours and availability for every display each year, here are some types of experiences to look for across the state:

Neighborhood Light Displays (Warwick & Coventry)

The Warwick and Coventry areas are particularly known for family-operated Christmas light displays. The Shenandoah Road/Bakers Creek area in Warwick clusters several impressive setups close together. Coventry also has a strong tradition of holiday lighting along residential streets, with displays ranging from simple but cheerful setups to multi-block productions.

Neighborhood Searches

Some of the best Christmas light shows in RI aren't formally advertised — they're families who go all-out on their home displays every year. Sites like ChristmasLightFinder.com and local Facebook groups (search "Rhode Island Christmas Lights" or "Warwick Holiday Lights") are excellent resources for discovering community-submitted displays across the state.

🏫 3. Christmas Lights Near Providence RI

Looking for christmas lights in Providence RI or the greater Providence area? Rhode Island's capital city and its surrounding communities have several options for holiday light seekers:

WaterFire Providence (Seasonal Events)

While not a traditional Christmas light show, WaterFire Providence occasionally hosts special winter and holiday events. Check waterfire.org for any scheduled 2026 holiday events.

Day Trip from Providence: Warwick's Lewis Show

Warwick is just 15–20 minutes south of Providence, making the Lewis Family Christmas Light Show an easy evening trip for Providence-area families. Take I-95 South to Exit 11 (Jefferson Blvd), follow Post Road to Shenandoah Road. Free parking, no tickets required.

📍 Directions from Providence: I-95 South → Exit 11 (Jefferson Blvd/Warwick) → follow Post Road south → right on Shenandoah Road. The display is at #12. Tune to 106.9 FM as you approach. Allow 20 minutes from Providence.

Cranston & North Providence

The communities north and west of Providence — Cranston, North Providence, Johnston — typically have strong residential Christmas light traditions. No single centralized show dominates these areas, but neighborhood drives through residential streets often turn up impressive individual displays, particularly in the hills of Cranston.

🌟 4. Tips for Visiting Rhode Island Holiday Light Shows

After 30 years of hosting an RI holiday light show, we've learned a few things about making these visits as enjoyable as possible:

  • Go mid-week. Weekends are the busiest nights at any holiday light display in RI. Tuesday through Thursday evenings are typically much quieter, and you'll get a better view with less traffic.
  • Arrive at dusk. The first 30–45 minutes after dark — usually around 5:00–5:30 PM in December — offers the most dramatic contrast between the lights and the darkening sky. It's also before the biggest evening crowds arrive.
  • Tune your radio before you arrive. For synchronized shows like the Lewis show, tuning to 106.9 FM while still on the main road means you'll have music playing as soon as you see the first lights.
  • Layer up. Even in a warm car, you'll likely want to step out for photos. Rhode Island December nights are cold — bring a jacket.
  • Check weather and cancellation policies. Rain and high winds can sometimes delay or cancel outdoor displays. For the Lewis show, check our weather cancellation policy before you head out on a questionable night.
  • Bring cash for donations. Most free Rhode Island light shows are supported by voluntary donations. A few dollars per car goes a long way toward keeping these community traditions running year after year.
